PACS imaging is used widely in the field of medicine for storing images that help in diagnosis. PACS imaging enables quick access to images and sometimes simultaneous access to the same image by physicians separated by distance. PACS is fast replacing the conventional methods of X-rays and films. Radiology reading rooms are being fitted with PACS display screens boasting of film less reading rooms. PACS helps the radiologists in teleradiology. Before the popularity of PACS the traditional X-rays required the use of films which had to be stored under the patient’s name for future reference and had to be looked over when the patient came calling again. These films made a bulk and once they were obsolete the disposal of these films became cumbersome.
Today many recycling methods are in practice. The toxic wastes are transported in labeled tamper resistant containers which are specially designed to protect sensitive medical information. The X-ray film recycling is done using reputable and approved recyclers. The X-ray films are mingled and mixed with many other images in a contained area. This is then certified and sent to proprietary refiner. Here they are shredded and the plastic base is recycled. The silver emulsion is re used for industrial and commercial purposes. The paper inserts are again cross shredded and pulped for reuse.
